At the start of Play Smart in 2018, we envisioned a preschool where children learned through play. At our school, the students not only learn in a play-based environment, they also receive the added benefit of being attached to a pediatric therapy center. Our students all receive 30 minutes of occupational therapy in the classroom each week.
Here are the top 5 reasons why children benefit from having occupational therapy lessons in the classroom (even if they don't qualify for individual therapy).
1) EVERY child benefits! Using peer modeling techniques, our students that are better with some skills are able to model and be helpful towards others. Even those students who do not qualify for individual therapy benefit from additional instruction in occupational therapy skills.
2)Occupational therapists work on class participation, following directions, and paying attention in the group setting. (Good skills for all!)
3) Therapy in the classroom allows for collaboration between the therapist and the teacher. Teachers are able to ask questions and gain ideas for how to help their class further their fine motor and other skills.
4) Occupational therapy teaches students important skills needed daily in the classroom. Functional skills such as behavior, sensory needs, gross motor movement, fine motor, attention, mindfulness etc.
5)Having an occupational therapist in the classroom helps identify other students that may benefit from individual therapy services.
